Linocut Prints by J.R. Bateson

J.R. Bateson's linocut prints are made using lino — a simple grey material once used to cover kitchen floors. Rather than printing large blocks, he breaks the image down into small pieces and builds it up again, running the lino through the press multiple times to create different layers of colour. Blank white space is central to the process: it creates the effect of light shining from behind, in the same way that light passes through a stained glass window.
