About J.R. Bateson

J.R. Bateson is a south-east London artist working in oils, linocut printmaking, pastel, and gouache. Based in Brixton, he grew up in a household shaped by art — both his mother and grandmother were painters, and it was from them that he first learned to draw and paint. After completing a degree in drama at Manchester University, he returned to Brixton, where he has lived ever since.

He is drawn to the people and places of his own locality — particularly the many sides of Brixton itself, Brockwell Park, and the life that goes on there. The drama of colour is central to his practice, and he has been making linocut prints for a number of years in a printmaking studio just around the corner from where a young Vincent van Gogh once lived.

John is also interested in spirituality, drawing inspiration from the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits — a thread that runs through much of his work, including a series of paintings made inside HMP Brixton.
